BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK
There is no Place Like Bryce Canyon! The first thing ever said about this park was "that's a heck of a place to lose a cow in!" Its spectacular scenery, history and culture, and its fun recreational activities really put it over the top! It attracts over 1 million visits every year! Hikers and Horseback Riders can experience the breathtaking sites of the rock spires (hoodoos). This park is right along the Edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in Utah. The parks unique structure is due to its spectacular erosion. Water has been carving it for over 1,000,000 years! This will split the rock as it freezes.
FUN and BASIC FACTS:
Location: Utah, Colorado Plateau Region Established: September 15, 1928 Size: 35,835 acres Elevation: 8,000-9,000 ft. Named after Ebeneser Bryce, a rancher, who when found the park stated: "This is one heck of a place to lose a cow!" Prairie dogs were wiped out in 1950s, but were reintroduced in the 1970s More than 400 species of plants. Bryce Canyon isn't actually a canyon. It's a natural amphitheater. On a clear day, Visibility in the park can go well over 100 miles. Paiute Indian history says the colorful hoodoos were "Legend People" who were turned into stone by the trickster god Coyote. Foxes, Mountain Lions, and Black Bears, though rarely seen, all inhabit the Park. PLANTS and WILDLIFE:
ANIMALS: There are many animals that can be found in this park. Hummingbirds, foxes, elk, and falcons are all seen throughout the day in the Park.
